Identification
Why do I need to provide ID?
Under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006, all stock brokers and many other financial service providers must meet strict requirements for identifying clients. These new rules came into effect on 12 December 2007.
What sort of ID can be provided?
We require a certified copy of ID taken from the following categories. You can supply 1 item from Category A, or 1 from Category B AND 1 from Category C. (See below for an explanation of what constitutes a “certified copy”.)
You can provide ONE of the following Category A documents:
Category A:
- Driver's licence
- Passport
- Proof of age card
OR two documents, one from Category B AND one from Category C:
Category B
- Birth Certificate (Australian)
- Citizenship Certificate (Australian)
- Pension Card
- Seniors’ Card
Category C
- A noticed issued by the Commonwealth or State Governments, displaying name and address of applicant (e.g. a Centrelink notice)
- A notice issued by the Australian Tax Office within the last 12 months, displaying name and address of applicant
- A notice issued by a local government body or utilities provider displaying name and address of applicant (e.g. a council rates notice or electricity bill)
If you will have trouble meeting these requirements, please call our Helpdesk on 1300-360-071.
What is a certified copy of ID?
Your ID must be certified as a true copy. This will involve getting a clear photocopy of the document(s) and having this photocopy certified by a person from the list below.
The certifier should state that the document is a certified copy of an original which they have viewed. The certifier should include their name, address, phone number, and the capacity in which they certified the document (for example as a police officer, judge, etc).
What is an “Original Certified Copy”?
Under the legislation, we cannot accept a copy of the certified document. This means that you should send us the copy with the original signature of the certifier. We cannot accept this document by fax or email.
